What the morph transition in PowerPoint actually does
PowerPoint’s Morph is a slide transition that animates the difference between two slides. The workflow is: duplicate a slide, change something about an object on the copy — its position, size, rotation, colour or shape — and apply Morph to that second slide. On advance, PowerPoint smoothly interpolates from the first state to the second, so the object appears to glide, grow, spin or recolour as you move between the slides.
It works by matching objects across the two slides. Where PowerPoint recognises an object as the same one on both slides, it pairs them automatically; where it cannot, you can force the pairing by giving both copies the same name with a !! prefix. It interpolates position, scale and rotation cleanly, and handles some formatting changes well.
Where it breaks down is object matching. If PowerPoint cannot tell that the shape on slide two is the same shape as on slide one — because it was redrawn, regrouped or renamed — it will not morph between them; it fades instead, usually with no indication of why. Understanding that the whole effect rests on object identity is the key both to using it well and to knowing its limits.
Which versions have Morph: 2013, 2016, Mac and the rest
The version question is the one most people arrive with, so here it is directly — but check Help then About for your exact build before you rely on any of it, because the year on the box is not the whole story.
Creating a Morph transition requires a Microsoft 365 subscription build, or PowerPoint 2019 and later, and it is also available in PowerPoint for the web and on Mac, iOS and Android. The confusing case, and the reason this question is asked so often, is PowerPoint 2016: the one-time-purchase 2016 does not have Morph, while the Microsoft 365 build that is also labelled 2016 does. Same year on the box, different answer. PowerPoint 2013 and earlier cannot create Morph at all, and a deck that already contains one will play the transition as a plain fade on those versions — the file still opens, but the effect does not run.
Morph is a built-in feature, not something you install — there is no add-in or download that adds it to a version that lacks it. If your build does not have it, the only route inside PowerPoint is to move to a Microsoft 365 build or to PowerPoint 2019 or later. Where Morph stops: two slides, matched objects, one advance
Three limits define where Morph stops, and they all follow from it being a transition between two slides rather than an animation within one.
It is bound to a slide advance. The change only happens as you move from one slide to the next, so you cannot morph something in the middle of a point while staying on the same slide and talking over it. It depends on object matching, which means renaming, redrawing or regrouping an object silently breaks the effect — the morph quietly becomes a fade, and nothing tells you why. And it is not scrubbable: you cannot sit at 40% through the change, look at it, and adjust it, because the interpolation only exists during the advance itself.
None of that makes Morph a bad tool — it makes it a specific one. For zoom-and-pan storytelling in a .pptx that has to travel to other people’s machines and play back reliably, Morph is genuinely the right choice, and nothing on this page changes that. The rest of this page is about what becomes possible when morphing is not a transition at all.
True shape morphing on a scrubbable timeline
In DeckSlide, morphing is not a transition — it is a property with keyframes. You pick a start shape and a target shape, and the outline itself reshapes across whatever duration you set. A circle genuinely becomes a star; the geometry actually changes, rather than one picture dissolving into another.
Because it lives on the timeline, you can scrub the playhead and stop anywhere in the middle of the change — at 40%, at 70% — and see the shape at that moment. It is not welded to a slide advance, so a diagram can morph into an icon while you keep speaking over the same slide, at the exact moment your sentence calls for it.
And because it is just another animated property, it composes with everything else in the editor — clipping masks, the sixteen blend modes, per-layer colour grading — all running on the same shape at once. Morphing is not a special mode you enter; it is one more thing a layer can do on the timeline.
Paths and keyframes instead of guessing at matched objects
The deeper difference is who decides what animates. Morph infers your intent by comparing two slides and guessing which objects are the same. Here you state your intent directly: set a keyframe at the playhead, or turn on record and simply move the layer, and the animation follows what you did.
Once a move exists, its motion dots appear on the canvas and you drag them there to retime and reshape it — no number fields. Paths run straight or as smooth spline curves, and orient-to-path turns a layer to face the direction it is travelling. Easing is a choice of seven curves, and there are fourteen entrance and twelve exit animations, each with its own duration and an instant preview against the actual layer.
The practical consequence is the one Morph users feel most: nothing breaks silently. Because the animation is attached to the layer explicitly rather than inferred from object matching, renaming or rebuilding a layer does not quietly turn your animation into a fade. What you set is what plays.
What does not come across from PowerPoint
Before the pitch, the limits — because they decide whether this is even relevant to you. There is no .pptx export. An existing PowerPoint deck can be brought in — as editable layers, minus its animations — but nothing built here becomes a PowerPoint file on the way out. A deck share link and an embed do exist. Neither is a file by another name: what a reader opens is the live page, which they cannot save to disk.
Speaker notes and real charts both exist. There are no templates to start from and no tables, and slides cannot be dragged into a new order. If any of those is central to how you work, this is not a drop-in replacement and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise.
If your deck has to arrive in someone’s inbox as a file — a .pptx or a PDF they open on their own — PowerPoint remains the correct tool, and this page is best read as background on how morphing works rather than as a recommendation to switch. Morphing in front of a live audience

That is the whole point of morphing being a live, timeline-driven property rather than a baked transition — and it is also the only delivery this product offers. There is no exported file of the morph and no link to it; the way anyone ever sees it is by being in the room while you perform it.
